Boats and Streams

In this post, we will learn about boat and stream concept, and provide sample questions to help you understand the topic better.

General Points to Remember

  1. Water always flows in downward direction.
  2. Boat can able to travel both upward and downward direction.
  3. Speed = Distance/Time
  4. Time = Distance/Speed
  5. Distance = Speed*Time
  6. Distance = km/hr*hr
    Distance = km
  7. 1km/hr = 1000m/3600sec = 5/18
    km/hr*5/18 = m/sec
    m/sec *18/5 = km/hr
  8. Downstream Speed: If the boat is moving along with water direction. This is called as Downstream speed.
  9. Upstream Speed: If the boat is moving against the water direction. This is called as Upstream Speed.
  10. Speed of water = Speed of Stream = Speed of current
  11. Speed of boat = Speed of man
  12. Speed of boat = Speed of boat in still water = Speed of boat in normal water
  13. Rate = velocity = speed
  14. D1/S1 + D2/S2 = T
  15. Speed is inversely proportional to time
    S1:S2 = 3:4
    T1:T2 = 4:3

Speed of Stream = 3km/hr

Q9: Shiva can row 6km/hr in still water it takes him twice as long to row up as to row down the river. Find the rate of stream?

Solution:
Man's rate in upstream = x km/hr
Man's rate in downstream = 2x km/hr
Man's rate in still water = x+2x/2 = 6km/hr
x = 4km/hr, 2x = 8km/hr
Rate of Stream = 8-4/2 = 2km/hr

x = 1.5km/hr

Q14: A motor boat takes 12hrs to go down stream and it takes 24hrs to return the same distance. What is the time taken by boat in still water?

Solution:
If t1 and t2 are the upstream and downstream time. Then time taken in still water is given by
= 2*t1*t2/t1+t2
= 2812*24/12+24
= 16hrs.

Now, According to the question
(x+y) * 10 = (x-y)*15
10x + 10y = 15x – 15y
5x = 25y
x=5y
x:y = 5:1
